I agree. Try The Changling starring George C Scott. The banging on the side of the bath is scary not unlike The House on Haunted Hill or the balling rolling down the stairs in the middle of the night and no one there! Or, one of the most scary films I had ever seen was made in 1922 called Nousfararto(sic) very scary. Or Salems Lot you will love Mr Barlow!!
I know Nousfararto...that man is creepy...and looks a bit like the one in Salems Lot which scared the hell out of me when I was a teenager. I havn't seen it for years...I wonder if it would still be scary? I definitely think that the ones involving more suspense than gore are scarier because by the time they've built you up, when he/she bursts out of the wardrobe or from behind the door, I am ready to jump out of my chair-and usually do!
Like questions like this, not too taxing, yet rewarding in themselves.
Night of the Demon (1957)
Ringu (1998)

Forgot to mention Sharknadio
Way better than Jaws or Meg, really very funny and the name tells you all about it.
Never shown on UK Television, to my knowledge.
Watch in sequence 1 to 5. I think 6 is in the pipeline
If you like chainsaws and the Damion Hurst version of a shark, mixed with the inability to die of Chuck Norris, then this is for you
