    Default Help please!!!

7 Months ago i brought a laptop screen from america, it was delivered by DHL............now they have sent me an invoice for £50 customs charges. (From DHL -not customs and excise)

What i would like to know is where do i stand with this, as its been 7 months since the item was received and DHL have paid customs............can they make me pay this long after i received the item, surely i should have paid before the item was released?

I really don't know, but I would be tempted to ignore it. It certainly seems a long time after the fact to be chasing you for the money. See what happens. If they persist, you could always ask at the CAB.

It doesn't state how long after delivery they will invoice you, but it DOES say that they will.

It also seems you are not alone:

Importing goods does make you liable for duty, ask yourself it's worth ruining your credit rating if they issue a CCJ against you. This is something you have to take into account when buying cheap from abroad, it isn't always the bargain you first imagined.

Pay it and then ask customes if they can reduce it for you from what i remember they charge you 3% import duty on the item, then they add the postage cost to the total and then they charge 17&1/2% vat on the whole lot, they may reduce it a bit for you if you moan enough, if they do then they will refund some. But you wont get the extra charge that DHL put on back.
I think they have a nerve charging vat on the postage charge, when A: it isnt paid in this country and B: the price's DHL and Fed EX charge are extortion anyway. Sorry I am waffling, but i did get some money back from them once, they probably gave it to me to shut me up. )
