Seller's Description
Original 10 3/4 inch x 8 1/4 inch Wood Engraved Cartoon page titled A MORNING IN THE HOME LIFE OF AN EMOTIONAL ACTRESS from Punch, February 26, 1919.
The cartoon is by Frank Reynolds (1876 - 1953). Reynolds was born in London and studied art at Heatherley’s School of Art. His earliest illustrations appeared in ‘Longbow’ and ‘Pick-Me-Up’ in the later years of the nineteenth century. In 1901 he became a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours; he exhibited there and at Walker’s Art Gallery, London. His first cartoon appeared in Punch in 1906. He became a regular contributor eventually succeeding his brother-in-law, Frederick Henry Townsend, as art editor in 1920.
Punch, or The London Charivari, was a British weekly magazine of humour and satire established in 1841 by Henry Mayhew and wood-engraver Ebenezer Landells. Historically, it was most influential in the 1840s and 1850s, when it helped to coin the term "cartoon" in its modern sense as a humorous illustration.
The page is in very good condition with printed text and another cartoon on the reverse.
