Frankie Dettori - born in Italy in 1970 to a father who himself was a great champion jockey in his homeland - burst on the British racing scene in 1987, when he rode his first winner, Lizzy Hare, at Goodwood.  Since becoming champion apprentice in 1989 with 75 winners, he has established himself as a superstar among jockeys - riding 233 winners in 1994 to become champion jockey, as well as winning the Oaks and Irish Derby on Balanchine and the Breeders' Cup in Kentucky on Barathea.  In 1995 he won the Oaks again on Moonshell and the St Leger on Classic Cliche to record his 1,000th win in Britain.
John Karter has traced his life and career back to his Italian childhood, right through every triumph - while not forgetting the occasional brash mistake, which in one case threatened to derail his career.  Family friends from Italy, and trainers like Luca Cumani who have employed Frankie, all contribute to this lively portrait of the hero of the turf enhanced by over 100 superb action photographs.
