Skillbuilder Activities
In the Counting Club , children build a foundation for math by learning to identify numbers by their names and by their symbols. They also practice counting, adding, and subtracting as they learn to correlate quantity with number symbols. In addition, youngsters are invited to stretch, twist, hop, wiggle, and sing along with playful woodland critters to develop large-motor skills.
Educational Focus
In the ABC Diner, youngsters identify uppercase and lowercase letters and learn the relationship between the letters and the sounds they represent. They also build vocabulary as they are exposed to a variety of food items in the diner. As they work through the four levels, youngsters practice isolating beginning sounds of words—an essential pre-reading skill.
In the Shape Shack, children continue to develop pre-reading skills as they sort familiar objects and learn how to find differences in similar-looking things. This ability to differentiate is an early predictor of reading success and prepares children to discriminate among similarly shaped letters such as b, p, and d.
The Shape Shack also builds important vocabulary and thinking skills. As they attend to each set of objects, young learners practice sorting and categorizing according to shape, sound, color, and group.
In the Pattern Parade, children complete patterns by focusing on color, size, or sound. As they advance through the levels, youngsters need to finish patterns that use combinations of these attributes. By Level 4, children are ready to demonstrate their understanding of patterning concepts by creating their own patterns.
In Mouse Match, children are encouraged to match similar letters, numbers, patterns, and shapes. Concentration and memorization skills are enhanced as children review all the elements they have learned in the program. As the skill levels increase, the patterns and quantities become more challenging.
Play-and-Learn Activities
In the Hide & Seek Gallery, youngsters search for Reader Rabbit after he hides in busy backgrounds. As they help Mat the Mouse find Reader Rabbit, children strengthen their ability to focus on and discern a single object that is surrounded by many—an important pre-reading skill.
In Zany Zoom In, Reader Rabbit heightens preschoolers’ curiosity and sparks their imaginations by inviting them to explore a forest scene and look beneath the surface. As children discover the hidden animations, they find that things are not always what they appear to be.
In Body Builders, children build Reader Rabbit or one of his friends by assembling the correct body parts. Youngsters focus on the size, shape, and color of each piece as they make their favorite character or create their own imaginary friend.
In Crazy Costumes, Reader Rabbit and Mat the Mouse play “Let’s Pretend” as youngsters dress them up in different outfits. Children sort costume pieces by size to determine if they belong to Reader Rabbit or to Mat. They can imagine that they are doctors, astronauts, or police officers along with Reader Rabbit and Mat, or they can mix up the outfits for a creative fashion show.
In Coloring Clowns, children enhance their creativity as they choose and color a variety of pictures that they can personalize and print out.
