Seller's Description
Birds of New York by Elon Howard Eaton. Illustrated by Louis Agassiz Fuertes. Published by The University of the State of New York (at the direction of the New York State Museum); 1916 Contains 106 vibrant, full page color plates by L.A. Fuertes. Did you know that Fuertes actually produced 118 original paintings which are housed at the New York State Museum Cultural Education Center Historical Archives? The book is a 4to sized cloth bound hardcover. Gray-green cloth with blue titles and logo on front cover. Index to plates inside front cover from Acadian chickadee to Yellow warbler. From inside cover: "This series of 106 plates are reprints from the plates used in the work entitled "Birds of New York," issued as volumes 1 and 2 of New York State Museum Memoir 12. These plates carry the names of the birds represented and include all of the birds known to breed within or to visit the State of New York." Eaton's earlier work was a two volume set published in 1910 and 1914, Birds of New York, issued as volumes 1 and 2 of New York State Museum Memoir 12. This volume contains the color plates (and not the documentary text) of those earlier works. Louis Agassiz Fuertes (1874-1927) was an American bird artist and ornithologist. Fuertes, who is considered one of the greatest bird artists, was noted not only for his remarkable illustrations of birds, but his presentation of the birds in their natural habitats. Fuertes produced more than 3,000 bird illustrations during his career. Fuertes illustrated the Birds of New York books, worked as an illustrator for National Geographic magazine and among many other highly acclaimed works is even credited as helping to popularize bird watching through a series of collectable cards he did for Arm & Hammer Baking Soda which were distributed in the 1920s and 1930s. Fuertes work is quite prized by both collectors and antique dealers who sell the framed prints. (And yes, in case you're wondering Fuertes was named for the naturalist Louis Agassiz.) Elon Howard Eaton (1866-1934) was an American author, professor and ornithologist. He was New York State Ornithologist from 1908 to 1914. Elon authored the Birds of New York series, illustrated by Fuertes, and commissioned by the director of the New York State Museum John Mason Clarke. (Clarke was quite involved in the production of the books, and his correspondence with Eaton and Fuertes has been preserved in the New York State Archives.) (Both Eaton and Fuertes were born in, and resided in, New York.) Marginalia lovers dream. It appears that the owner of this book used it to document in almost diary form throughout the book what appears to be more than 20 years of bird watching from 1931 to 1953 with dated notes throughout: on blank pages, reverso of plates, etc, even laid in sheets. Reading copy with much wear and tear to boards and covers. Book has numerous flaws with serious wear and tear to cloth covers. Cloth is peeling from front boards and there is a split the length of front spine. Shaken. Multiple sheets laid in front of book were cello taped and are now loose and the cello tape has left a dark stain. There is evidence on about six pages in front of insect or rodent nibbling on bottom corner (these are actually laid in lone pages, not pages from the actual book.) Throughout the book there may be pages laid in to document the owner's birdwatching and there may be a cello tape stain at the top of those pages. The color plates are bright but some have fingermarks or light foxed spots, at least one page has ink transfer from the previous page. There are some plates with notes or marginalia on reverse (which does not bleed through.) Please see our third photograph which shows the page cut poorly by the publisher with the title Birds of New York at the very top without any blank paper margin above it. Although we've shown only one page with notes or marginalia, this unique volume is filled with similar pages. It is our opinion that the prints are suitable for framing. Please see our many photographs.

We routinely contact anyone overseas who purchases a VHS video to ask them to check if their machine can play an NTSC tape before we ship. Many DVDs also have a specific format by country. If you are purchasing a DVD, please make sure the DVD is a format that will play in your machine.
