Instructions — Hang Out with the Planets

Before you color your planets, do some research (like a real astronomer) to see what each planet looks like. BEFOREYOU PUNCH OUT EACH PLANET be sure to note its name so that you will know where to hang each on your mobile. Then use crayons pencils, or markers to color the eight planets and the sun. (Let marker color dry before touching.)

On the back of each planet, you can write its name and/or fun facts that you discover (How far away from the Sun? How far from Earth? etc.). Or, you can color both sides. Use a pencil point to punch out the small holes in the planets and the two arm pieces.

1. Measure and cut 8 lengths of 10 inches (25 cm) each of the string. Use these to tie and hang the 8 planets onto the two arm strips, according to the planet names indicated on the arms. These do not all need to hang at the same length. Trim the strings accordingly.

2. Measure and cut 4 lengths of 12 inches (30 cm) each of the string. Insert and tie off a string through each of the four holes at the top corners of the two arm strips. (fig. A & B)

3.Take the arm strips and join the two slots, forming a + with four arms. IMPORTANT: Use tape to wrap and reinforce the joint at the BOTTOM (not top) of the slotted joint so that the aims stay in a + formation (fig. C)

4. Cut a 6-inch length (15 cm) of string and lie one end to the hole in the Sun. Slip the other end down through the top of the slotted joint of the + . (fig. D)

5. WITH ADULT HELP: Gather the four strings attached to the corners of the arms. Hold the strings at their loose ends and hold above the + . Carefully adjust lengths of the stings until the + looks level with the ground. When level, knot all four strings together at the gathered ends. Take the remainder of the string and loop and tie it around this big knot to create a hanging loop. (fig. E)

Have an adult help you hang the loop from a hook in the ceiling, over-the-door clothes hanger or ceiling light fixture.
