** Looks to be signed in Sharpie by Lacy J Dalton on the CD cover

Lacy J Dalton's Bonnie Tyler rasp and her lower registered alto are very much missed. In fact, the very last time Dalton had a significant hit was the line dance titled "Black Coffee" some couple of decades ago. Though this 16th Avenue singer has had a few follow-ups they had slipped into oblivion. But not to her ardent fans, her 1991 "Crazy Love" and her 1992 "Chains in the Wind" are criminally ignored gems. After another musical detour where she sang about horses and the west in 2004's "The Last Wild Place" she's back. Yet, to those who have waited patiently for a new album to drop are mildly disappointed that this is a 12 track covers of some of Hank Sr.'s biggest hits. More disappointments ensued when all of these cuts are overtly familiar tunes without any adventurous endeavours into some of the icon's more obscure cuts. Nevertheless, not all is doom. The production here is first class, country without being overcrowding, with the cynosure on Dalton's vocals. Vocally, this 64-year-old still nails each track with the right emotional nuances and even in the uptempoes she still shows rigor and vim.

Though Dalton stays religious too close to the originals at times but this doesn't mean she has not invested her individuality in some of them. On forlorn ballad "Cold Col Heart" Dalton takes her time to squeeze every ounce of hurt out of this classic. Such raw emotions give this song a fresh and compelling undercurrent often missing in less experienced artists. "My Bucket's Got a Hole in It" has a slightly bluegrass twist to it giving us a new empathy for the song's protagonist's heartbreak over her dud. Fiddles and steel give "(i Heard that) Lonesome Whistle Blow" a traditional country lonesomeness that is what heartbreak done the country way sounds like. Giving us a new appreciation of Hank Sr.'s song writing craft is Dalton's take on "Why Don't You Love Me"--it's so addictively catchy that after it you're not even sure if heartbreak is a good or bad experience.

Producer Steven Swinford also gives "Your Cheating Heart" a fuller sound with added percussions and guitar hooks giving it a more contemporary feel. Dalton captures the fun and youthfulness of the bouncy "Jambalaya (On the Bayou)." Nevertheless, there are a few misfires: "Hey Good Looking" is obviously a song sung from the male point of view. For Dalton to accommodate it from a feminine perspective together her sometimes very deep throated delivery just sounds like a mismatch. Her straight ahead cover of "Honky Tonk Blues" could have been more imaginative.

To have Dalton back on disc by itself is an occasion to celebrate. In today's country music where the ladies all sound alike and only care for reaching the high notes, it's refreshing to hear Dalton. A lady who knows what heartbreak sounds like and has the prowess to communicate it convincing with heart. Here's to Lacy J and let's hope she'll grace us with another disc of new material soon.
