City and Islington College also known as Candi, is a further education college located in the London Borough of Islington, England with five major sites across Islington. It is a member of the 157 Group of highly successful Further Education colleges in England, of which its principal Frank McLoughlin CBE was the first Chair.[1] The college has been awarded Beacon status by the Learning and Skills Council,[2] and a 2008 Ofsted report awarded the college a Grade 1 (outstanding) in all aspects of its inspection report.[3] The college is the first further education college in the country to win the Queen's Anniversary Prize twice.[4] In 2005 the College completed a £64 million building programme. This was the biggest investment in accommodation in the history of further education in the UK.[5] The college introduced the International Baccalaureate at its Sixth Form College in September 2010.
Twelve years ago the college was spread across 13 different sites and three boroughs, and some of the buildings dated back to the 19th century. There are now five centres across the borough of Islington, each one specialising in a particular set of subjects. The centres provide study and recreational spaces, all with the latest ICT equipment for teaching and learning.[7]
The five centres are:
- Centre for Applied Sciences
- Centre for Business, Arts and Technology
- Centre for Health, Social and Child Care
- Centre for Lifelong Learning
- Sixth Form College
Each centre is focused on running particular courses and qualifications and each has its own community of students, teachers and support staff.[7]
