Rare edition Phoenix 1-50 magic hardbound collection book circa late 1940s

The Phoenix was a four-page biweekly magic periodical by Walter Gibson and Bruce Elliott out of New York that ran on a subscription basis from January, 1942 through February, 1954.  Noted magicians of the era contributed up to a half dozen magic tricks, slight of hand, card trick “effects” etc. each issue. No advertising.

Louis Tannen later published six bound volumes containing 50 issues of The Phoenix each. Those volumes found today are maroon with gilted lettering on the spine. Later editions have a gold colored Phoenix on the front of the cover.

The edition I am offering is what I believe to be one of the very first attempts at this project. It is bound in green cloth, not maroon buckram. It does not have the bold gilt lettering on the spine but rather smaller print, slightly off center. More telling is the introduction page which differs in the later editions. In place of Louis Tannen’s New York address is a box with “FIFTY CENTS” printed.  There is no acknowledgement to Tannen at all.

I cannot find mention of this edition and can only add that it was among my father’s magic periodicals that he obtained in the mid to late 1940’s. It looks to be a true first edition of The Phoenix 1-50 collected works. If you need more information, feel free to contact me.

This book is in excellent shape with tight binding and slightly yellowing pages. There are no rips, tears, bent corners or writing. There is no year or publishing information whatsoever.
