Seller's Description

Original 1850 10 inch x 13 1/2 inch steel engraving of READING THE NEWS.

A baker carrying a steaming tray of pie and roast on his head, distracted from his errand and listening to a boy who reads out the news from a paper, while a girl sits on a wooden stile next to him, reading over his shoulder, a girl hodling a child with another beside her, another woman and a boy with a hoop, crowding around to listen.

Engraved by William Taylor .

From a painting by Sir David Wilkie (1785 - 1841). Wilkie achieved international recognition for his highly original paintings of events and episodes from contemporary life. His skills as a narrator were evident in the facial expressions and poses of his characters, and in the informative detail he included. He was born in Fife, the son of a rural minister and began his formal artistic training at the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh when he was fifteen. He then moved to London in 1805 and became a full member of the Royal Academy in 1811. He was appointed Painter to the King in 1830 and knighted in 1836.

’From the picture in the Vernon Gallery’.

Image size 9 1/2 inch x 8 inch

The engraving is in good condition with a piece out of the top left border corner and smaller pieces out of the lower border corners. Reverse side blank.
